Summer Series: Banking Below I-30
Special thanks goes out to JaRhondaLynn Cameron, who teaches in Dallas, Texas and brought this excellent series of journalistic coverage by the local news station to my attention!
An investigation reported by WFAA in November 2020, found that 20% of banks in Dallas County don't serve the largely minority neighborhoods below Interstate 30 (I-30). This is an issue that has burdened North Texas for a long time and now concerned community members are beginning to speak out and to report the banks in their community. Perhaps what was most disturbing about this video series, was the evidence that there may have been oversight or approval of these incidents on the part of federal bank regulators.
Check out the 3 part series below and tune into the supplemental videos linked for more details:
Supplemental videos:
1. Calls for Justice Department Investigation
2. How local governments can hold banks accountable for racial equity
