Win a Pizza Party with NGPF's Why Math Matters Competition: Taxes Edition!
We're celebrating the release of the new Taxes and Fundamentals of Algebra Unit in NGPF's Financial Algebra Course with a fun contest. Math teachers, your students can win a pizza party (insert pi/pie math teacher joke here) when they respond to the TAXES Edition of NGPF's Why Math Matters contest below.
Here's how it works!
CONTEST DETAILS:
- TEACHERS assign the prompt below to your students.
- STUDENTS respond to the prompt (details below) and submit them to their TEACHER.
- TEACHERS select UP TO THREE student responses. (NOTE: please ensure that the responses can be viewed by external users before completing the form below.)
- TEACHERS, complete this Contest Form ONCE.
TEACHER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, March 4th, 2022, 11:59pm Eastern Time
STUDENT PROMPT:
You may work independently or in a group of up to 3 students.
- Step 1: Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJhsjUPDulw ("How tax brackets actually work" from Vox)
- Step 2: Answer "Why does math matter when we discuss taxes and tax brackets?" in EITHER a a 250 word-max written response, 2 minute-max video response, 2 minute-max audio clip, 10-slide-max slide show, or infographic.
- Step 3: Submit your response to your teacher.
CONTEST WINNERS:
- We're giving away THREE (3) $150 pizza parties to the teachers whose students submit the BEST responses.
- Teachers will receive gift cards to local restaurants, which they then use to purchase pizza parties for their class(es).
- NGPF Staff will review submissions and select winners by 5:00pm ET on Friday, March 18.

About the Authors
Kathryn Dawson
Kathryn (she/her) is excited to join the NGPF team after 9 years of experience in education as a mentor, tutor, and special education teacher. She is a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in policy analysis and management and has a master's degree in education from Brooklyn College. Kathryn is looking forward to bringing her passion for accessibility and educational justice into curriculum design at NGPF. During her free time, Kathryn loves embarking on cooking projects, walking around her Seattle neighborhood with her dog, or lounging in a hammock with a book.
Dan Rolando
Always enamored with learning, Dan’s parents affectionately nicknamed him “The Sponge” as a kid. After earning his Engineering Master’s from NC State University followed by six years of teaching, Dan joins NGPF to pursue his passion of inspiring financial capability in anyone who will listen. Having navigated seven years of higher education debt-free through scholarships, work, creative budgeting, and a whole lot of help, he recognizes the freedom that comes from financial independence and hopes to share that gift with others. In the (rare) times he’s not discussing finance, Dan enjoys running, reading, playing board games, spending time with his daughter, and being sous chef for his wife.
Dave Martin
Dave joins NGPF with 15 years of teaching experience in math and computer science. After joining the New York City Teaching Fellows program and earning a Master's degree in Education from Pace University, his teaching career has taken him to New York, New Jersey and a summer in the north of Ghana. Dave firmly believes that financial literacy is vital to creating well-rounded students that are prepared for a complex and highly competitive world. During what free time two young daughters will allow, Dave enjoys video games, Dungeons & Dragons, cooking, gardening, and taking naps.
