Through a partnership between The Penn State Behrend Center for Financial Literacy, the CFA Society Pittsburgh, and Next Gen Personal Finance, we are again offering a FREE Financial Literacy Progress & Efficacy Assessment to measure student growth this year. Not only does the assessment provide you with detailed data to inform your instruction, but your participation also allows us to have multiple years of classroom-based data on the efficacy of financial literacy education.

In the 2023-24 school year, 281 teachers from 47 states administered the Financial Literacy Progress and Efficacy Assessment.

• 28,953 students took the pre-assessment
• 13,024 students took the post-assessment
• We were able to match 9,766 results

Here’s what you need to know:

• Benefits: You will receive detailed pre- and post-assessment data which you can use as a formal grade, to measure growth, and/or to inform your instruction
• Eligibility: Since this assessment is also part of a research project, we ask that you only assess your students if they are in Grades 9-12 and you are assessing the students on two or more standard areas.
• Data Privacy: Absolutely no identifying information about your students will be collected or shared; only the classroom teacher will have access to personal student data. 
• Standards Alignment: The exam is aligned to the National Standards for Personal Financial Education. There is no prescribed course, curriculum, or content provider for this exam. You should teach as you see fit.

Here’s a brief overview of how the process will work:

• Take a 10-minute teacher survey that will give you a unique teacher-specific code called the Class ID. 
• Assign a unique 6-digit code to each of your students, so that ONLY YOU know their identity. We don’t collect identifying student information from your students, ever.
• Administer the online pre-assessment to your students at the beginning of your course. Then, teach your course exactly as you normally would.
• At the end of your course, administer the online post-assessment.
• Penn State will conduct data analysis and reporting, which will be shared with you.
